How it works

What size can I print my image?

Two numbers decide it: the image's aspect ratio and its resolution. The ratio (width divided by height) decides which frame sizes it fills without cropping. The resolution decides how large it can print before it looks soft.

For resolution, divide each side's pixels by the DPI you need. At 300 DPI, the standard for prints viewed up close, a 3600×5400 px image prints sharp up to 12×18 in. Large posters are seen from a few feet away, so 150 DPI is usually enough for them, which doubles the size to 24×36 in.

For ratio, the calculator counts a size as a fit when it is within 3% of your image's ratio. That's close enough to print without visible cropping or stretching, and it's the same rule our poster mockup generator uses when it picks a frame size for your art.

Cheat sheet

Common aspect ratios and their print sizes

One file per ratio covers every size in its row. Ratios that share frames are grouped, because they're within 3% of each other.

Questions

Print size FAQ

What size can I print my image?

Divide each side's pixels by 300 to get the largest sharp print in inches: a 3600×5400 px image prints sharp up to 12×18 in. For large posters viewed from a few feet away, 150 DPI is usually enough, which doubles that to 24×36 in.

What DPI do I need to print a poster?

300 DPI is the standard for sharp prints you look at up close, like small frames. For posters 18×24 in and larger, 150 to 200 DPI usually looks sharp at normal viewing distance.

Why doesn't my image fit an 8×10 frame?

8×10 is a 4:5 ratio. Most camera photos and many digital files are 2:3, which is longer, so printing them at 8×10 crops about 17% off the long side. A 2:3 file fits 8×12, 12×18, 20×30 and 24×36 instead.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The calculator reads your image's dimensions inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server unless you choose to open it in the mockup generator.

What sizes should I include in an Etsy printable wall art listing?

Offer one file per aspect ratio, since each ratio covers several frame sizes: a 2:3 file covers 8×12 to 24×36 in, a 3:4 file covers 12×16 and 18×24 in, a 4:5 file covers 8×10, 11×14 and 16×20 in, and an ISO file covers A4 to A1.
